Security Project Profiles - Distrigas

Distrigas of Massachusetts LLC (DOMAC) owns and operates the Everett Marine Terminal, a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import and re-gasification facility along the Mystic River in Everett. This facility has been in operation longer than any other active LNG terminal in the country and is home to two LNG storage tanks with a combined capacity of 42 million gallons.

DOMAC selected BCM Controls Corporation as the Design/Build Contractor for their strategic, multi-phased Security plan. The base project included a complete Fiber Optic Network and CCTV protection for the site's perimeter. The Second Phase included CCTV cameras for the LNG Dock Area and critical areas including the top of the LNG Tanks.

DOMAC's classification as a Class I Division I Hazardous Environment mandated extensive research and engineering to ensure that all equipment, conduits, and wiring met or exceeded those requirements. The necessity of explosion-proof cameras presented a challenge from an installation and commissioning perspective. BCM developed and executed a detailed plan for both with great success. BCM selected Pelco as the manufacturer for the Explosion Proof Cameras and Head-end Video Systems. Integral Technologies was selected to provide the digital video recording (DVR) equipment.

While safety is a key factor on all BCM Projects, this was particularly critical in a Class I Div I facility. BCM personnel attended on-site safety instruction classes in order to meet contract requirements and to help ensure the safety of personnel working at the facility.

Installation Challenges
This unique facility presented numerous challenges and schedule coordination was a key consideration as work cannot occur while an LNG ship is in port. The installation of over 6500 feet of explosion proof conduit began in the summer and continued through the winter months. Regardless of weather conditions, BCM maintained the schedule throughout the duration of the project.

Due to the additional size and weight of the cameras, they were mounted on custom-made poles and mounts. Location heights on custom mounts ranged from 20 feet to approximately 80 feet.

Unique installation challenges were presented when cameras needed to be placed on the tanker dock as well as the top of both 185' high LNG tanks, exposing the cameras to the harsh salt environment. Once again, BCM developed the best plan and selected the appropriate equipment for the project.

BCM is proud to have contributed to the safety and security of DOMAC's Everett Marine Terminal.
